![]() Hi there my name is Susan am 24 and I have had acute myeloid leukemia, It all started in 1998 when I had my baby girl , I started bruising very easy and I sprained my wrist and it would not heal I also was bleeding all the time and if I cut myself I would bleed for a long period.
I kept going back to the doctors and they said it was only cause I am tired I came down with infections and kept getting put on antibiotics but after a long period of fighting for the doctors to give me a blood test I found out the same night I had leukemia I had to go into hospital the next day to get a bone marrow test , I went in and the doctor was very nice indeed but I could not believe it I asked him if I was gonna die ,, he said no and he told me that for every worse scenario there is ,, there is always a treatment and a cure for it ,, he told me to say that when I was feeling down or depressed and that would give me the strength to carry on so I did ,, the next 6 months was gonna be hell I knew that I was also leaving my daughter and my fiancee ,, I had to go back into hospital on the Monday and I had an operation to get which I was terrified because I had not had one before they put in a hickman line which is a tube that goes into your main artery that stopped me getting needles all the time I hated it the thing always got in the way but you learn to live with it.
I started my chemo and I was so scared that I was gonna die and I had this voice in my head saying your gonna die which I could sleep for I was on 10 days of chemo by the 8 I fell with an infection and went unconscious I don't know what they did for the next two days as I was not conscious as I felt myself coming round I would say hi then go back to sleep I could not keep my eyes opened I felt like I was at peace and I was in heaven ,, I know its hard to believe but I was living a different life for those two days I do believe there is something after life I know I have been there it was horrible when I came back I heard voices and I had illusions and sweats and everything but when I came to I was a lot better after that chemo got easier and I learned to enjoy life to the full , I was really sick with the chemo but I would get a break from being sick from morning till about 5...I had chemo for about 5 months and the sixth one I had a transplant
I also had to get radiotherapy with the sixth one but I got through it as I did before now after I came out of hospital I had to try and get my life back which has not been easy as my partner blamed me and so did his family we separated and I was on my own with my daughter and still is but I am stronger now than I have ever been and I have everything I need and I am happy still I am writing this a year and a bit later and I am still strong and healthy and I am getting more and more confidence everyday
